Recent comment of the scribe (in the Vanguard daily newspaper 3rd August, 2015) of the Nigerian University Commission (NUC) should concern all well meaning Nigerian. It is a source of worry and raises questions about his readiness to make the needed change that the Universities need desperately.
I respect the opinion of the learned Professor but if you don't care about the position of our Universities within the global community then there is a big problem. Yes, within local rating and some webometric criteria Nigerian Universities may be lagging behind for obvious reasons of poor Internet connectivity but is that all about ranking?
The professor should not pretend it there are other very valid criteria that the Professor should worry about.
Take for example how many doctoral degree holders do we have teaching medical and dental degree programmes in our colleges of medicine and health sciences?
What is the quality of research our University academic staff contributing to the global knowledge? What about collaboration among university staff and student with their counterparts within the international arena? How often do academic and support staff get trained? I can go on and on and I think the position of our universities globally should worry the NUC scribe.
